On a few occasions now I’ve dealt with clients that are having problems syncing Managed Metadata Columns between the Office 2010 client applications and SharePoint. It’s unclear how this problem has come about, and due to the fact that a lot of people don’t seem to use the Document Information Panel unless doing heavy Enterprise Content Management processing it doesn’t seem to be picked up straight away. We only really noticed it at the first client because the Harmon.IE outlook plug-in was unable to update MMS properties.
I’ve read tons of blog posts and various fixes across the internet, some suggestions to re-push the Content Types from the Hub, others suggesting turning on and off features, however the simplest fix I found was just to add a new MMS column and then delete it. (Apologies, but I cannot find the blog post where the Author suggested this after a PSS call with Microsoft!)
My colleague (Alex Brassington) and I tested it, and lo and behold this fixed our issue. Now we just had to roll the fix out across some 18,000 documents in a major ECM application. This is where Alex’s far superior PowerShell skills came to the fore and he wrote a very good script to bulk update the selected libraries in our system.
I’m not going to re-write his entire post here as he’s done a very good job of laying out he problem and the scripts that you can use to good effect to fix the problem are all available for you on his blog post here.
Enjoy
Paul.
